Their dates are national, even when the practical value of a day off is reduced because the holiday falls on a weekend.
State-Specific Public Holidays
Regional schedules add holidays such as Epiphany, International Women's Day, Corpus Christi, World Children's Day, Reformation Day, All Saints' Day, and Repentance and Prayer Day. Check the selected state's calendar instead of assuming that a closure in Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony, or another Bundesland applies throughout Germany.
2026 dates that need closer attention
- German Unity Day is Saturday 3 October, but the nationwide holiday does not move to Monday.
- All Saints' Day is Sunday 1 November in five states, and World Children's Day is Sunday 20 September in Thuringia.
- Christmas Day is Friday 25 December; the Second Day of Christmas follows on Saturday 26 December without an automatic weekday substitute.

What Happens When a Public Holiday Falls on a Weekend in Germany?
Germany generally keeps a statutory holiday on its calendar date. A Saturday or Sunday holiday does not automatically create a Monday substitute. Check the actual weekday before booking leave, arranging deliveries, or assuming that offices will close on an adjacent working day.
Public Holiday Pay and Work in Germany
Under Germany's Continued Remuneration Act, an employee who loses working time because a statutory public holiday falls on a scheduled workday is generally entitled to the pay they would have received. The applicable holiday is determined by the place of work, and sector rules, collective agreements, or lawful Sunday and holiday work provisions may affect scheduling.
Brückentage and Long Weekend Planning
A Brückentag is a working day taken as leave between a public holiday and a weekend. Thursday holidays such as Ascension Day and Corpus Christi can create useful four-day breaks when Friday leave is available. Regional holidays only create that opportunity where the holiday is legally observed.
