Why Religious Holiday Dates Change
Lunar Calendars and Moon Sightings
Islamic dates move through the civil year and some begin only after a local moon-sighting announcement. Hindu, Buddhist and other lunisolar calendars can also vary by regional calculation.
Holidays That Begin at Sunset
For an entry marked “Begins at sunset,” the first date in the displayed range is the opening evening, not an additional full daytime holiday. Use the complete range when planning an evening event or accommodation.
Regional and Religious Authority Differences
Communities may follow different calendars, denominations or local authorities. Check the relevant temple, mosque, synagogue, church, school or government calendar for the final local date.
Religious Holidays vs Public Holidays
Public Holiday Status by Country
A religious observance becomes a public holiday only where national or regional law and an official calendar say so. Christmas, Eid, Diwali or another observance may close public offices in one country but remain a normal workday elsewhere.
Compare country holiday calendarsSchool and Workplace Planning
For classes, exams, shifts and meetings, confirm the observance period first and then check the school or employer policy. Religious accommodation, annual leave and paid-holiday rules are separate questions.
Open school holiday calendarsReligious Holidays 2026 and 2027 FAQ
Do I need to use PTO for a religious holiday?
There is no worldwide rule. A listed religious holiday is not automatically paid leave. Check whether the date is a public holiday in your location, then review your employer policy and any applicable religious-accommodation process.
Why is Easter so early in 2027?
Western Easter is calculated from the Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon following the March equinox. That calculation places Easter on March 28 in 2027. Orthodox Pascha uses a different calendar method and falls on May 2.
What is the biggest religious holiday in the world?
There is no single neutral ranking. Participation, religious importance and public-holiday status differ by faith and country. Use the calendar by religion and location rather than treating one observance as universally largest.
