2026 U.S. federal calendar
How Many Long Weekends Are There in 2026?
Under the standard Monday-Friday federal schedule, 2026 has eight three-day federal holiday weekends without using PTO. Seven are created by official Friday or Monday holiday dates. The eighth comes from the Friday, July 3 in-lieu observance of Independence Day, whose statutory date is Saturday, July 4.
This count assumes a Saturday-Sunday weekend. State, local, school, private-employer, military, and non-U.S. calendars can produce different totals.

The Eight U.S. 3-Day Weekends in 2026
These eight windows create three consecutive nonworkdays under the standard Monday-Friday federal schedule without using PTO. Seven use the official holiday date; Independence Day uses the federal in-lieu date on Friday, July 3.
| Federal holiday | Three-day weekend | Why it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | January 17-19 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Monday |
| Washington's Birthday | February 14-16 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Monday |
| Memorial Day | May 23-25 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Monday |
| Juneteenth National Independence Day | June 19-21 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Friday |
| Independence Day | July 3-5 | Federal in-lieu dateJuly 3 is the federal in-lieu date for Saturday, July 4 |
| Labor Day | September 5-7 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Monday |
| Columbus Day | October 10-12 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Monday |
| Christmas Day | December 25-27 | Official dateThe official holiday falls on Friday |
These are the eight no-PTO federal holiday long weekends used for the page count. New Year's Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving Day are handled separately because their 2026 dates do not create three-day weekends on their own.
Observed-date rule
Why July 3 Counts as a Federal Observed Long Weekend
Independence Day remains legally fixed on Saturday, July 4, 2026. The holiday itself does not move to another calendar date.
Under the federal in-lieu rule, most federal employees working a standard Monday-Friday schedule observe a Saturday holiday on the preceding Friday. In 2026, that in-lieu date is Friday, July 3.
- Friday, July 3
- Federal in-lieu holiday and first day of the three-day break
- Saturday, July 4
- Statutory date of Independence Day
- Sunday, July 5
- Final day of the standard weekend
This creates a Friday-to-Sunday federal holiday weekend without PTO. A list counting only official holidays that fall directly on Friday or Monday may report seven long weekends. This guide also includes the July 3 federal observance, producing the total of eight.
Private employers and nonstandard work schedules may follow different policies. See theIndependence Day 2026 date and observed-date guidefor the complete calendar explanation.
Midweek dates
Which 2026 Federal Holidays Do Not Create Long Weekends?
Three of the 11 U.S. federal holidays do not create three consecutive nonworkdays on their own in 2026. Their dates fall in the middle of the standard Monday-Friday workweek rather than directly beside a Saturday-Sunday weekend.
| Federal holiday | 2026 date | Why it is not included |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday, January 1 | Friday, January 2 remains a regular federal workday between the holiday and the weekend. |
| Veterans Day | Wednesday, November 11 | The Wednesday holiday does not connect directly to the preceding or following weekend. |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday, November 26 | Friday, November 27 is not a U.S. federal holiday, so the federal schedule does not automatically create a four-day break. |
Some employers close on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but that workplace practice does not make November 27 a federal holiday. New Year's Day and Thanksgiving can still become useful four-day breaks by taking one PTO day.
Optional leave planning
How One PTO Day Creates Two Four-Day Breaks
The eight-weekend total includes only federal holiday breaks that require no PTO. Two additional 2026 dates can become four-day breaks when a Monday-Friday employee uses one leave day.
| Federal holiday | PTO day to request | Resulting break | Time off |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Friday, January 2 | Thursday, January 1 to Sunday, January 4 | 4 consecutive days |
| Thanksgiving Day | Friday, November 27 | Thursday, November 26 to Sunday, November 29 | 4 consecutive days |
These are PTO extensions, not additional federal holiday weekends. January 2 and November 27 remain regular federal workdays, and leave approval depends on the employer and workplace schedule.
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11. A standard Monday-Friday employee would need two leave days, either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, to connect it to a weekend. It is therefore excluded from the one-PTO options above.

Why 2026 Long-Weekend Counts Can Differ
Long-weekend totals can differ even when the underlying holiday dates are correct. The difference usually comes from the country being counted, the workweek assumed, or whether observed dates and PTO extensions are included.
Scope used here: the 2026 U.S. federal holiday calendar, a standard Monday-Friday work schedule, a Saturday-Sunday weekend, and no PTO.
Different Countries and Holiday Calendars
There is no single worldwide long-weekend total for 2026. Countries use different public, federal, bank, statutory, and regional holiday systems. A date that creates a three-day weekend in the United States may be a normal workday elsewhere.
Different Workweeks and Employer Policies
The count of eight assumes that Saturday and Sunday are regular nonworkdays. Rotating shifts, compressed schedules, weekend work, private-employer policies, and state or local calendars can produce a different practical result.
Natural Weekends vs PTO Extensions
Seven weekends come directly from official Friday or Monday dates. The July 3 in-lieu date adds one observed weekend. PTO can create two more four-day breaks, but those extensions do not increase the no-PTO count.

See 2026 Long Weekends by Month and Country
The U.S. federal count answers one specific question, but long-weekend planning can also depend on the month, country, regional holiday rules, and whether one leave day is used.
Use the 2026 long-weekend calendar by month and country to compare supported countries, view monthly calendar images, and distinguish natural three-day weekends from breaks extended with one leave day.
Country and regional calendars should be checked before booking travel or requesting leave because the eight-weekend total on this page applies only to the standard U.S. federal schedule.

Sources for the 2026 U.S. Long-Weekend Count
The count is calculated from official U.S. federal holiday dates and the federal in-lieu rule for holidays that fall on a weekend. These sources were checked on September 1, 2026.
The eight-weekend total is a calendar calculation based on these dates and a standard Monday-Friday federal work schedule. It is not a guarantee of leave for every employee or workplace.
